Georgetown Canal Day
Join Georgetown Heritage for their inaugural Georgetown Canal Day – a new event to celebrate the C&O Canal and raise funds for the organization’s canal boat and educational programs. The family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Canal Day programming will include:
- Live bluegrass music at the Mule Yard from local band Hollertown
- Meet & greet and photo opportunity with Lucy the Donkey and Kismet the Mule
- The first-ever mini canal boat regatta – a STEM craft activity featuring a rain gutter “canal”
- Puppet show, kids dance party, and story time with Councilmember Brooke Pinto aboard the canal boat
- Lawn games and more!
The Georgetown Heritage Canal boat has been in dry dock since 2023 as repair work is completed on Canal walls, but a ramp will provide access from Thomas Jefferson Street during the event, as the boat is used as a performance area for kids’ entertainment. Across the street in the Mule Yard, participants can bring their own picnic lunch and enjoy complimentary treats from local businesses.
Community members Samantha Ring and Alexis Wetzler are co-chairs of Georgetown Canal Day and have galvanized support for the free event from individuals and businesses across DC. Provenance 1787 is the presenting sponsor of Canal Day, and the event is also supported by Martin’s Tavern and The Georgetown Preschool.
