Meet the Artist | Washington DC-base artist Craig Schaffer

Date: Sat, September 21st 2019

Artist's Proof is pleased to announce Welded Fractals: A Sculpture Exhibition by Washington, D.C. artist Craig Schaffer. Schaffer's sculptures represent the dynamic and powerful meditations on the reality of geometric repetition in the natural world. Join us at the gallery on Saturday, September 21, 2019, from 3-5 PM and meet September's featured artist Craig Schaffer. Enjoy the beautiful fall weather as you meander through our sculpture garden and get to speak one-on-one with Schaffer about his Welded Fractals series!

Craig Schaffer's Welded Fractal Series is inspired by the infinitely repetitive building blocks of all elements of life. In his sculptures, Craig explores the shapes created by the stems and leaves of plants as they reach for the light, the convoluted unfurling of clouds, the formation, and fracturing of mountains, and the jaggedness of the coastline as it kisses the sea. Real-life is nonlinear and reflective, so the spiraled paths carved in our consciousness by these natural processes are mirrored in Craig's work. This series was featured in the Morgan Stanley Garden at the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Garden is inspired by the fractal geometry and patterns found in nature, music, art, and communities. The Garden, designed by Chris Beardshaw, won Best in Show and the Silver Gilt medal.

Craig Schaffer received his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Craig maintains two studios: one in Washington, DC and the other in Pietrasanta, Italy.
